Review: 2021 Dona Paula Los Cardos Malbec

Another vineyard we have yet to deep dive, and another under $20 bottle for this week. Dona Paula has something in practically every price range and appears to cover the gamut of possible Argentina variations. Although we've not had the pleasure of going higher-end with this line, the budget and mid-tier offerings properly do the job with a decent percentage of success.

Nose: Red fruit right off the top. Which is unexpected given the region's lean towards dark fruit and violet. Not a trace of either, even with a bit of time. With each sniff there's a slight trace of spice and graphite. Still quite a bit of red fruit, though.

Palate: As on the nose, the red fruit takes the lead. Quite approachable with decent texture; velvety tannins and medium acidity. With subsequent sips notes of spice and pepper emerge to add some balance and minor dimension.

Finish: Medium to long. Pretty much as advertised on the nose. The earthier elements linger a bit longer and a nice burst of mint appears towards the finish for a clean finale.

To its credit, it is priced sensibly and carries more tally marks in the good column than the poor. Good for what it is, even better for what it isn't.
