Review: 2019 Jean-Luc Baldès Malbec du Clos

I don't know much about this particular brand, but it came highly recommended. They have a very nice website, and if I knew French I would probably enjoy it much more. Either way, bought this off a friend who was clearing out some bottles from his collection. This should have immediately made me suspect that it wouldn't be that great, but he had a few Mendozas up for grabs, too (and you best believe I bought those for a song). So hopefully this doesn't disappoint.

Nose: Deep notes of violet hit the glass immediately as I decant. Also a big hint of blackberry, and some balsamic in there as well. The dark fruit becomes more pronounced as it sits and there's a fair bit of push and pull with the violet with additional passes.

Palate: Pretty much as advertised as on the nose, but the blackberry hits first with everything else following suit. The mint expands as I swallow. Approachable if your expectations for a predictable glass are put aside. Well balanced with grippy tannins and medium acidity.

Finish: Medium-length, but the violet really makes a reach for the finale and pulls up from under the blackberry. The mint also returns to provide a mildly clean finish.

Not bad and worth the risk of picking one up if you see it. Absolutely ready to drink now.
