Review: 2021 Domaine Bousquet Virgen Natural Organic Malbec

Probably behind only Catena on this site, we've covered a ton of Domaine Bousquet over the last 18 months. Some offerings have proven excellent, while others have fared less.

Virgen defines our USDA-certified, no-sulfites-added, vegan, organic wines, the purest expression of our pristine, high-desert Tupungato Valley terroir in Argentina's Mendoza region. Here, sandy/gravel soils year-round sunshine and 50°F/10°C day-to-night temperature shifts combine for exceptional conditions in which to grow healthy, high-quality organic grapes.

Nose: Sweetness arrives immediately as its poured into the glass. Big notes of violet along with star anise and dark cherry. It simmers down a bit as it sits with a fair bit of floral influence and on additional passes, the cherry pulls itself out from under.

Palate: Pretty much as advertised on the nose, with the fruit hitting first and the spice and floral notes expanding. Quite approachable with a decent amount of acidity and tannins. With a bit of time, notes of roasted plum and raspberry deeper into the glass.

Finish: Medium, with the spice at the fore this time and the fruit developing towards the finish. Not as intense as on the palate.

Priced under $20, it presents itself decently and could work in a pinch or as a daily drinker at dinner. But it is also certainly not the strongest representation of what this vineyard has to offer.
