Review: 2019 Silvan Ridge Malbec

We recently contemplated purchasing a bottle or two we know to be quite evident in its poor form. But then why waste time, money, or effort doing something out of malice in such a way? It's kind of dumb and a predictable thing to do. So instead we're going to keep aiming for better wine. Like this one, from Eugene, Oregon, and winemaker JP Valot. The region, of course, is known worldwide for its Pinot Noir, but there are a few folks who are mastering Malbec or at least turning out interesting iterations.

Nose: That easily identifiable US Malbec profile of red fruit on top, specifically plum and cherry. As it rests in the glass the cherry note expands and makes each subsequent sniff brighter. A bit of soil makes its way upward with even more time and eventually brings the fruit into balance.

Palate: Red fruit here as well but not as sweet as teased on the nose. Very well balanced with easy tannins and acidity. An interesting blend of cardamom and vanilla make eventually emerge to keep things from becoming too easy and predictable.

Finish: Medium to long. The vanilla eases up and the red fruit builds back up. An interesting note of milk chocolate pops up at the end along with dark cherry.

I had never heard of this vineyard prior to this, and can't help but wonder what the percentages of grapes make up this bottle because it's hard to believe this could be a 100% Malbec. Either way, not a bad higher-end treat to consider if you're looking for something different.
