Review: Arraigo Benegas Estate Malbec

A transgression against my co-writers has occurred: I failed to file a post last week, and therefore our routine of planning reviews 3x/week was derailed in week 3 of 2023. To make amends, I will be your author for the entirety of this week. Expect plenty of snark and obscure pop culture references that will no doubt endear me to our audience with great zeal. No theme this other week other than my adorable delivery. It's time to get things started.

Today's wine features grapes from three different regions with the majority originating in (surprise!) Uco Valley, Mendoza (Gualtallary) and aged 4 months in French oak.

Nose: Lots of red fruit notes on first pass (strawberry, bing cherry) with the oak influence coming up from below on second and third sniffs (vanilla, caramel). Some faint leather in there as well and bit of cola lurking. As it sits the red fruit expands and diminishes the savory notes.

Palate: As advertised on the nose with soft tannins and balanced acidity. Very approachable with good texture. More vanilla and cherry on the second sip, but oak notes expand with time.

Finish: Long and dry. The strawberry builds and then recedes rather quickly.

Nothing here which gets the heart racing, and it's a serviceable bottle. By far the most red-fruit forward Malbec I've had from Mendoza in a few weeks. However, anyone looking for some sort of adventure or complexity may need to set their sights elsewhere.
