Review: 2018 Clos de Los Siete

A brand that made waves on many year-end lists, especially as there was a surprising absence of Malbecs on many of them. Not a 100% Malbec (55% Malbec, 19% Merlot, 10% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 12% Syrah, 2% Petit Verdot , 2% Cabernet Franc), but Michel Rolland's flagship Malbec has proven consistent in its quality over the last several years, so the standards are high. Let's see if they are met.

Nose: Dark fruit (blueberry, plum) with a bit of spice and cassis. Increases with sweetness with the blueberry pushing forward at first, with floral notes balancing over time.

Palate: Medium-bodied, no doubt the work of the Merlot and Cabernet dragging down the burly characteristics of the Malbec grape, but still retains a savory element that is most welcome. Oak and pepper expand with each sip, with the acidity and tannins staying in balance throughout.

Finish: Long and confusing. The herbs fight with the dark berry for dominance and there's a touch of minerality as it goes on that should add some complexity, but instead makes for a confusing conclusion.

It was offensive or off-putting, but something just didn't mesh well on the finish. We reviewed last year's vintage a few months back and found 2017 to be superior in quality. However, if you can't land a bottle of that year, this will do nicely.
