Review: 2021 Alta Vista Vive Malbec

This week has been filled with newer offerings, and the last two posts featuring 2021 releases beginning with the letter "A". This is also the first Alta Vista Malbec we've had the opportunity to enjoy. This is a 100% Malbec from Mendoza, so there are certain flavor expectations that are already set in my mind -- lots of dark fruit and oak in particular. Let's hope this runs along those lines.

Nose: As predicted, a very classic profile of dark fruit (blackberry, blueberry, roasted plum) running through a fair bit of pepper and oak. Fruit-heavy on the second pass, but floral notes peek out from underneath. A bit of rest lets things mellow out a bit and become much more balanced.

Palate: Savoury and easy to drink, very approachable. The dark fruit character takes the lead but oak and baking spice notes develop over time. With more time the blackberry and plum notes expand and a slight trace of vanilla is also picked up.

Finish: Too short for my liking, but could probably classify it as a medium-length finish. I wanted this to go on as long as possible with the dark fruit and pepper, with the fruit getting the last word. The richer notes come to the foreground at the very end.

A fantastic bargain clocking in at $13, locally. It is a lovely introduction bottle to Malbec, and it can be given as a solid gift for all of the upcoming holiday obligations that need tending and participation.
