Review: 2018 Altamana Grande Reserve

This week's closer look into the Malbecs of Chile's Maule Valley got off to a rather precarious beginning, and hopefully, today's offering from Altamana course corrects matters in short order. I do not recall when or how this bottle came into my possession. Even before its arrival, it delivers the feeling that it's always existed since the beginning of my wine adventures. I can't quite place the sensation. So not only am I glad to be opening and trying it, but I'm glad that feeling will finally disappear.

Nose: A wonderful blast of raspberry and cherry cola syrup leading the way. Oak comes up from below to join the fruit. On the second and third passes, the raspberry takes the lead, bringing with it a light floral note.

Palate: As advertised on the nose with smooth tannins. With time there's some pepper showing up, and all for the better.

Finish: Long and immensely pleasing. The cherry develops and brings with it some light oak and just a touch of baking spice. The intensity of the finish is highly memorable and one of the more potent finishes I can recall.

Easily the best of the Chilean Malbecs I've tried so far. This one is for cooler autumn evenings around a fire pit. Stunning stuff.
