Review: 2020 Ceibo Malbec

Okay, let's do a week of budget line bottles procured while on a business trip to Chicago. Having been turned on to Malbec a little under a decade ago, I'd like to think that my palate is experienced enough to discern between a high-quality bottle and a less-than-high-quality offering. I have high hopes for this bottle, named after the national tree of Argentina. I have also likely set my expectations too high by typing that last sentence, but let's find out.

Nose: Dark berry and a bit of plum. The plum opens up on the second sip and some light herbal touches join in the fun. With more time in the glass, the slightly sweeter notes expand over the herbs.

Palate: Coming in as advertised by the nose and a classic Malbec construction, with the plum becoming less assertive. The berry becomes more and more pronounced with subsequent sips, and there's a mild chalky overtone that comes out over time.

Finish: Long and rolling. There's really no further development taking place, flavor-wise and that's just fine. At least there are no surprises other than the plum taking more of a hold.

All in all, not a bad little everyday bottle that could be utilized in a pinch or stopping at the store en route for a dinner party elsewhere.
