Review: 2018 Trivento Reserve Malbec

2018 Trivento Malbec Reserve

If analytics is something by which to base an audience, no one really noticed that we went on vacation last week because chances are they were engaged on a holiday as well. We are resuming programming for the moment. You're welcome.

Trivento recently released a 25th Anniversary Malbec that I’m having a hell of a time sourcing. I am not to the point of going full bore bourbon buddy about it: going store to store, asking online, or checking secondary black market pages, but this is a curious one to hunt. And to be honest, I’m not really fully sure what separates this bottle from the Golden Reserve line, either, but it’s that allure of trying to go for something that isn’t there, the whole collector’s mentality, and that’s kind of a bad thing too. Trying to have a Zen approach will not magically conjure that bottle to my home state any time soon, so becoming active to get the bottle to enjoy is the only other alternative. Writing about it is only the by-product of the experience. Cheers.

In the meantime, what we are grabbing here is a straightforward profile of a malbec, bold and dry with a little bit of acidity. Lots of blueberries and a soft note of rose petal on the nose, and it drinks with hints of blackberry, plum, and dark chocolate. The finish is full of oak and vanilla, an obvious nod to the barrel, which helps to neutralize the fruit-forward nature of the bottle. A reasonable, expected experience for $13, which might serve well in a Malbec 101 course.
