Review: 2018 Catena Alta Malbec

2018 Catena Alta Malbec

I think our love for Catena has been fairly well documented up to this point, and I can assure you more of the love fest is on its way in future posts. The family is a juggernaut of Argentinian Malbec, and this is their value-line, introductory bottle. But be not fooled by the price tag: it's just as good as some of their higher-priced bottles.

Loads of blueberry and currant on the nose with a faint note of violet and hibiscus flower with a bit of air. It's a full-bodied Malbec that doesn't pull any punches on the palate with lots of dark fruit, mild leather and tomato towards the end that cuts through tannins. The finish isn't as long as I would have hoped, but that's a minor setback and shouldn't detract from the whole.

At $14, this is a fantastic place to start digging deeper into Malbec if this your first time exploring, but it's also a great everyday bottle to enjoy.
