Review: Phebus Reserva Malbec

Phebus Reserva Malbec

I like pizza. Quite a bit. And I have a waistline as evidence of my glutenous devotion. But I'm not about to uncork a higher-end bottle to pair with an All-Meaty Detroit-style from Jet's. And that's where this little number comes into play.

100% from Lujan de Cuyo in Mendoza, and $17 at my local big box shop it checked all of the boxes for a reasonable price point, and region and seems like Jimmy Suckling is quite a fan based on the selling card on the shelf.

Not exactly a Malbec of standard expectation there's some violet and dark fruit on the nose, but it gives way to loads of spice, pepper, and acidity. Some oak on a rather long finish. It's not the best representation of Lujan de Cuyo, but it's not something that could be used as a drain cleaner after one glass. And it works well with pizza, so it's a win-win for everyone involved.
