Review: 2019 Matchbook Malbec

Matchbook Malbec 2019

Yesterday was May Day, the day of the worker. Therefore I am going easy on this review, but first the details, via its website:

Vintage 2019
Varietal Composition: 79% Malbec 11% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Petit Verdot
PH 3.78
Barrel Aging 15 Months
Alcohol % 13.9
Size 750 ml

Received a bottle of this from my former boss, now retired, who spends his time traveling along the west coast of the US. He picked me up one and in exchange, I bought his Chicken Pad Thai on our recent lunch date.

Skepticism was high: it's been a long time since I enjoyed a domestic Malbec in the same fashion as something from Argentina or France.

Burly but straightforward, this wine carries a hefty waft of black currant that gives way to a burst of mint as it spends some time in the glass. The dark fruit palate develops earthier notes of cedar and fresh basil and carries a nice tannic upswing. The finish is tight but soft and remains to linger for an agreeable amount of time. A most welcome surprise and one of the better domestic Malbec in recent memory.
