Review: 2021 Domaine Bousquet Alavida Malbec

Domaine Bousquet Alavida Malbec 2021

The album of the week feature is something that the members of our collective (now down to four from five at the site's maiden voyage) pride ourselves on curating just as much as we do our reviews. This week's bossa-friendly selection is slightly on the schmaltzy side, but the best bossa tends to gravitate towards that warm marshmallow feeling rather than a cold, brittle jazz execution. It also basically reflects the general mood as spring finally shows up after several false starts.

Most wine drinkers tend to steer away from malbec during the summer months in favor of something cleaner and lighter. We don't. It's all or nothing up in this gym, for the best workouts occur in the heat of the practice gym while everyone else is working on their tan.

The last few bottles from Domaine Bousquet were most pleasing, and therefore to take this off the shelf to a good home was a no-brainer. However, this was the first time its Kosher, organic offering was made available around these parts.

So let's go: deep blueberry and raspberry throughout with not as much intensity as I was anticipating. It's still well-structured with slight tannins, but the real treat is the complex finish full of chocolate and earthen notes that stick around for a bit of time.

For a wine that has a venerable reputation on a comparatively larger scale than most in the region, DB keeps turning new and engaging releases at a steady price. Would that more large-scale producers would take notes.
