Review: 2020 Chateau Chantal Malbec Reserve

I was confused as hell when my parents said this was Michigan-made, as it was affixed with the words “Lujan de Cuyo” on the front label. Turns out the Traverse City operation bought a small plot in the area. Would love to read the tech specs to try and figure out with whom they are working.  If I were a real writer, I would just fire off an email and see if they respond. Either way, it’s quite intriguing to see a northern Michigan enterprise getting into the Malbec game. I’d like to see them try and plant some Malbec in the region properly. Also, there needs to be a drag performer under this moniker. Surprised there isn’t one already.

At $20 this is a decent showing: subtle but slightly unfocused with ground pepper and black licorice on the nose and a bit of oak balancing the earthier elements on the palate. A dry finish that isn’t overly acidic or complex. Either way, there’s now a standing order to pick up another bottle to see if matters improve over time.
