Review: 2018 Bodega Colome Estate Malbec

2018 Bodega Colome

Having only recently (10 years) been of drinking age, I am often left to wrestle with the question: are we in the golden age of Malbec? I often hear that the 90s were, in so many ways, where matters were truly vivid and in their prime. But it appears to me that there are more and more (see yesterday’s post) vineyards who are starting to wrestle with making a proper Malbec, and I wonder if the Golden Age is still head of us. But even if we are/are not there, this is a golden bottle. I also enjoy the notion that this beauty arrives from Salta. I’m not sure if my palate can full rationalize or discern a Salta Malbec versus one from Uco/Mendoza/parts elsewhere, but what it CAN tell you is that this is something else.

Nose: Plums, hibiscus, blackberry, wet autumn foliage.

Palate: More blackberry, dark chocolate, light pomegranate, baking spices

Finish: Lengthy and ultra-tight with some heat towards the end, keeping the fruit going throughout.

Comments: Very few signs of weakness, just a striking vintage that could easily be stacked against a bottle 5-7x its suggested price range. If you can’t tell by now, highly enthusiastic thumbs up. One of the best glasses of Malbec I have had in 2021. Buying a few more, not just one, for the cellar.
