Review: Achaval-Ferrer Quimera Malbec 2014 and 2016

Achaval-Ferrer Quimera Malbec

Our first double dip of Quimera. That’s the intro.

2014 is a 50% Malbec, 24% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 13 months, 80% in new French Oak, 20% in 2nd, possibly 3rd, fill. Grapes from all over Mendoza. So it’s a blend and it certainly acts like one. The tannins are a bad game for Kyrie: all over the place with no real direction, obtrusive and not really contributing in a positive way. Lots of berry and plum notes and the finish delivers the way a straight Malbec normally does.

I believe the 16 has similar stats, couldn’t find anywhere to confirm. This seems was a bit more settled than its older sibling.  The plum notes are still there on the nose, but the palate has much more complexity to offer: cracked pepper, blackberry and an earthy undertone that hangs around for the finish. This is a situation where age doesn’t necessarily equate to greatness.

Final call: 16>14

$39/$38 USD paid respectively
