Review: 2019 La Posta Pizzella Malbec

2019 La Posta Pizzella Malbec

I love Steely Dan. Loved Don and Walt before millennials and Gen Z showbiz kids got into them. And I know that it’s not the same Altamira referenced in the song, but the mere mention of reading the word brought about satisfying feelings. This Pizzella was sourced from Altamira in the La Consulta region of Uco Valley, 20% aged in new French oak, 60% in 2nd or 3rd refill French/American oak and 20% unoaked (presumably concrete?). I wasn’t the biggest fan of the 2018 but have had a massive change of heart for the 19. There’s an impressive and easy-going balance of dark chocolate, cherry and the oak influence on the nose. The palate flows easily from fruit to spice to floral, never missing a beat in the transition. The finish is dry and easy going, with minimal acidity.

This Pizzella was absolutely cracking. Surprisingly way into this more than I would allow myself to be into a particular bottle. Lauren Catena shows from beyond the three point arc with this one and landed it like Steph Curry in his prime.
