Review: 2018 Domaine Bousquet Gran Malbec

2018 Domaine Bousquet Gran Malbec

I’ve fallen prey in this amateur hobby of mine to comparing Malbec to (insert music or movie form here). That’s just lazy writing, and I own this fact with no apologies. Perhaps it speaks to the degree of seriousness with which I take this form of commentary.

As much I dig the opportunity to type “blackberry” a thousand times until my brain bleeds out my ear canal, sometimes it’s the only descriptor which fits with accuracy and expedience. In its own way descriptors are constricting, but equally as stilted is comparing a glass to a Coltrane solo during his Miles Davis period, or an Ozu film. What if someone fails to appreciate the stillness of Ozu like something found in a particular bottle pour? It’s a missed opportunity.

Nose: Highly aromatic with (wait for it) blackberry and currant leading the charge. Some time in the glass presents black cherry undertones. Palate: Somewhat dry and the black fruit continues to dominate. A little bit of earthen influence. Nothing overwhelming, but nothing underwhelming about this. Tannins keep the whole thing together in good form to a finish full of (wait for it) blackberry.

Therapy session aside, Bousquet presents an affordable and accessible malbec, something worth more than the suggested retail price. Much like our collective aim of this site, it certainly cuts through some of the bores on the same tier.
