Review: 2015 Tapiz Black Tears

2015 Tapiz Black Tears

As a matter of policy, I do my level best to avoid bottles bearing names that could double for something Drake would endorse or brand. There is simply too much out there to trifle with Malbec which could mistaken for overpriced eau de toilette or concept album. This time I was trapped at the mercy of a client we were taking to dinner. That itself can be a risky proposition: sometimes they pick the most expensive shit or the worst stuff on the menu with little to no thought on what’s being paired or the quality of other offerings. This time, though, our man knew what he was doing.

This was simply an incredible glass full of fig and plum with a very mild eucalyptus undertone, very intense in flavor but well-balanced, never out of control or too fruit forward. The finish had a wonderful combo of dark chocolate and cinnamon and stayed around for a long time, and for this I am thankful. It was a lovely companion. I barely paid attention to the conversation, or the steak.
